This bone plaque would have been used as a playing piece in a board game. It was found in Salamander Street in Leith in Edinburgh. It dates from the late 16th century.
On the circular plaque there is a lively representation of a man on horseback. He is wearing late-16th-century dress.
Board games were played at the royal court and in aristocratic circles using bone playing pieces, and inventories mention 'chas men of bane'. Otherwise, board games were widely used as a pastime, usually with pieces of simpler forms and materials.
