Pipe-bowl, early 18th centuryThis clay pipe-bowl was made by David Banks of Leith in the early 18th century. One of four pipe-bowls of clay Tobacco reached Scotland from America in the early 17th century and smoking soon became popular. Tobacco was smoked in clay pipes, which were cheap and disposable.
