Pipe-bowl, mid 17th centuryThis is one of 16 clay pipes from Seafield and Covington in Lanarkshire. It was made by William Banks, the first Scottish based manufacturer of clay pipes, who was based in the Canongate in Edinburgh. It dates from the mid 17th century. The heel has 'W.B.' (for 'William Banks') inscribed on each side. William Banks was established in the Canongate by 1622. He, his sons, and a few other makers in Canongate and Leith supplied the needs of smokers in the Edinburgh area and beyond until the early 18th century.
