RecordBrooch (electrotype), known as Ugadale or Lossit Broochmade in West Highlands
Brooch (electrotype), known as Ugadale or Lossit BroochThis is a replica of a silver-gilt brooch known as the 'Ugadale, or Lossit Brooch'. The brooch was made in the West Highlands in the early 16th century. The brooch has an outer band decorated with strap-work. Within it, eight turrets set with coral and pearls alternate with small round bosses. The oval crystal in the middle is set on the lid of a capsule which opens to reveal a relic container. According to tradition, the brooch was given to the MacKays by Robert Bruce after he stayed at Ugadale. In its present form, however, the brooch is considerably later than Bruce's time.
