This ceremonial baton belonged to a Dean of Guild in Glasgow called Thomas Buchanan. Made of ebony and silver-mounted, it dates from 1859.
The baton has a crown on top and is inscribed 'Dean of Guild/Thomas Buchanan/1859' and 'Let Glasgow Flourish / Police Chambers'.
The Dean of Guild Courts had an important role in enforcing strict building regulations in industrial towns and cities.
