This wooden baton of a Messenger at Arms, an officers of the law courts, dates from the 18th century. It is attached to a silver badge with the Royal Arms pre-1801.

After the Treaty of Union of 1707, the Court of Session and the College of Justice remained within Scotland, and were allowed to retain their pre-Union authority and privileges.
