Badge
Add to album

This lead badge was found in the mill at Melrose Abbey in the Borders. It dates from the 15th century.

On the front of the badge is an emblem for Melrose - consisting of a mell (a type of mallet) with a rose in the centre.

An abbey was founded at Melrose in 1136 but was destroyed by Richard II in 1385. In the 15th century a Gothic abbey was built, which followed the general layout of the earlier building. It was destroyed by the English under Henry VIII in 1544-5.
