Discipline stool

This discipline stool is from Monzie in Perthshire. If the Kirk Session found someone guilty in matters of public morality, the punishment was to be placed on the stool and be publicly rebuked by the minister in front of the congregation.

Kirk Sessions worked hard to impose the standards of public morality. They investigated sins such as swearing, gossiping and Sabbath-breaking, and were particularly concerned with the sexual behaviour of the congregation.
