Silver kettle and stand made in Perth
This silver kettle and stand were made in Perth by Robert Keay but have marks for Edinburgh 1839-40.
The kettle has a wicker-covered handle and a wooden finial on top of the domed, hinged lid. The kettle sides are engraved with swags of leaves and flowers and the arms of the family, Paton. The stand has four reeded, wedge-shaped feet.
An 1784 act required every silversmith in Scotland to send his wares to Edinburgh for marking. Although not rigorously enforced, most silversmiths in Glasgow and some in Perth, Aberdeen and Dundee followed this rule.
