This silver teapot was made in 1750-1 by Edinburgh silversmith James Welsh. It was awarded by the Edinburgh Society to John Hutton for his achievements in paper making. Hutton was a paper maker at Springfield Mill in Polton in Midlothian.
The inscriptions on the sides of the teapot record a series of medals presented to John Hutton from 1757 to 1763.
As with the textile industry, paper-making was originally a craft industry which was later mechanised.
