Broadsword, with the arms of Sir John Grant of Freuchie

This blade of this basket-hilted broadsword bears the date, 1562, but both the blade and the hilt probably date from the early 17th century. The hilt was made in England but the decoration on the blade is Scottish.

The grip is covered with silver wire and shagreen - a rough grainy leather made from sharkskin. The blade is etched and gilt with the arms and initials of Sir John Grant of Freuchie.
