Carbine, owned by the Lairds of Grant
Add to album

A carbine is a rifle with a short barrel. This example is from the family armoury of the Lairds of Grant of Speyside. In its present form it dates from 1673 but the barrel was made around 1630 for Sir John Grant, 6th Laird of Freuchie (1546-1637).

The carbine has a snaphance lock mechanism which uses a flint to spark the gunpowder. The lock-plate has the maker's mark 'WM'.
