Cannon-ball

This stone cannon-ball was found under the cliff on the north-east side of Tantallon Castle in East Lothian. It dates from the 15th or 16th century.

Stone cannonball, from under the cliff on the north east side of Tantallon Castle

Dating from the mid-14th century, Tantallon Castle may have been built by William, 1st Earl of Douglas. It was strengthened in the 1530s by James V, but was largely destroyed in 1651 by a besieging Cromwellian army led by General Monk.
