This iron cannon chamber was found in Broughty Castle in Angus. It dates from 16th century and was for a breech-loading gun - the sort of small piece which would have been used to defend the castle.

Iron perrier, or movable chamber of a cannon, found in the North East tower of Broughty Castle

In the 16th and 17th centuries firepower developed significantly. The government used weapons such as cannons to exert its own power. Castles which had once been almost invincible were now vulnerable to attack.
