From Linlithgow Palace, West Lothian
This painted wooden ceiling boss is from Linlithgow Palace in West Lothian. It dates from around 1617.
The boss features a unicorn carrying a flag - an early version of the Union Jack.
The present Linlithgow Palace dates from 1425, initiated by James I. Both James V and Mary Queen of Scots were born here. In 1746, while pursuing the Jacobites north, British forces under the Duke of Cumberland set fire to the palace, leaving it a ruin.
