RecordCoffin pall of Alexander, 4th Duke of Gordon
Coffin pall of Alexander, 4th Duke of GordonThis coffin pall dates from around 1827. The decoration is the heraldic arms of the Duke of Gordon and the pall was probably used in the funeral procession of Alexander, 4th Duke of Gordon, who died in June 1827. The black silk pall is painted in oils. Coffin palls or 'mortcloths' were usually supplied by the church or by trade and craft guilds. Families with armorial bearings used heraldry on the coffin palls to demonstrate the ancestry of the deceased and to emphasise their position in society.
