Baptismal bowl of pewter

This pewter baptismal bowl was made around 1790 by Stephen Maxwell, a pewterer in Glasgow. Such bowls were used at a table or put into baptismal brackets.

The centre of the shallow plain bowl bears a mark or touch of Stephen Maxwell - the words 'Success to the British Colonies' enclosing in a square a three-masted ship in full sail.

In the Presbyterian Church, baptism is one of the two sacraments conferring membership of the church on the subject. The other is communion. Both sacraments are carried out in the face of the congregation.
