Chalices are used to hold the wine during Mass. This fragment of a lead chalice was among the items found in the grave of a bishop in St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall in Orkney. The items are thought to date from the 13th century.
This is part of the bowl of the chalice.
The importance of bishops in the running of the Church is illustrated by the impressive objects found in their graves. The objects show that bishops had wealth, influence and social status.
