Travelling chalice

Chalices are used to hold the wine during Mass. This metal travelling example dates from the 17th or 18th century.

The chalice has a baluster-shaped stem. The lower part of the bowl and stem are encircled with a flat vertical panels.

After the Reformation, it was often difficult for Catholics to worship openly. Priests found themselves with no churches and had to travel to different Catholic communities and households to conduct Mass.
