A buddie is a basket for carrying fish. This example from Shetland is made of docken stems. A docken or dock is a coarse weed with large leaves and a main root that grows almost vertically downwards.

For centuries it was the land which supplied the resources of everyday life for most people in Scotland. It provided the materials for homes, furnishings and belongings. In some remote areas the use of local materials continued well into the 20th century.
