by Peter Henderson, Glasgow, early 20th century
Set of Highland bagpipes, half-size, of African blackwood, ivory mounted, by Peter Henderson of Glasgow, early 20th century. The sheepskin bag of the bagpipe, conventionally covered in a decorative fabric such as tartan, is here left uncovered to show the form of the bag and the method of tying in the stocks.
Half-size or 'Reel' pipes were made to the same pitch but the overall proportions were reduced giving a smaller set of pipes. Different sizes of Highland bagpipe were more commonly offered by makers in the past.
Peter Henderson (1851 - 1903) was a successful bagpipe maker, a pipe music collector and publisher. He founded his business in Glasgow in 1868, taking over the premises which belonged to Donald Macphee.
