Pot from Inchtuthil, Perthshire

This ceramic pot was found at the site of the Roman fort at Inchtuthil in Perthshire. It was imported from Gaul for use at the fort sometime between 82 and 87 AD.

The pot is a type known as mica-dusted eggshell ware, made in the Roman province of Gaul (modern day France). It was decorated with a number of bosses. Fine pots such as this one would have been used by the officers.

The Roman army obtained supplies from three zones: locally, within the Roman province of Britannia, or further afield in the Roman empire. Officers in the army often brought fine wares with them to Scotland or purchased imported pieces.
