Jar from Mumrills, Stirlingshire

This ceramic jar was found at the site of the Roman fort at Mumrills in Stirlingshire. It was made in the Thames estuary area of southeastern England between 140 and 165 AD.

The jar is of a type known as black burnished ware 2 (BB2), a kitchen ware made in southeastern England. It has been restored from a number of sherds, and is lacking only part of the rim and shoulder.

An administrative system existed to ensure that the Roman army was supplied with food and other goods. Quartermasters were responsible for obtaining supplies, and dealt with army craftsmen, various traders, and the native population.
