Shoes from Newstead, Roxburghshire
These leather shoes were found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. They illustrate the range of footwear worn by soldiers between 80 and 180 AD.
The shoes include examples where the soles were nailed or stitched to the bottom layers, sandals and one-piece shoes. The smallest sandal was for a child.
Leather was used for a wide range of objects necessary to a Roman soldier, including tents, saddles, harness, shoes, clothing, belts, purses, bags, shields and shield covers. The specialist Roman leatherworkers used a wide range of tools for their work.
