This sketch was one of a series of sketches for a book entitled 'Jack and Tommy' produced during the First World War. Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell (1883 - 1937) was born in Edinburgh and studied art at Paris and Munich. Cadell served in World War I in the 9th Royal Scots as a private, and then as an officer in the 8th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
