French engraving of a Highland soldier
Add to album

Hand-coloured engraving of a Highland soldier entitled 'Le Gallant Ecossais à Paris' published by Genty of Paris, after 1815.

A Scots soldier takes the hand of a young woman. The dress of the soldier in the engraving is fanciful, with the tartan, hose tops and bonnet depicted inaccurately; while feathered bonnets did have dice round them, these were red and white at that time.

The productivity of French print-sellers underwent rapid expansion during the encampment of the Highland Regiments in the Bois de Boulogne while Paris was occupied after the Battle of Waterloo, the short kilts of the soldiers capturing their imagination.
