78th Highlanders at Edinburgh Castle

Coloured photograph of a painting of the 78th (Highlanders) Regiment (Ross-shire Buffs) at Edinburgh Castle, 1860 - 1861.

The soldiers and their families, many of the children in military uniform, enjoy a day at the Castle. This is an artist's impression of Edinburgh Castle; the buildings are not structurally accurate and Arthur's Seat is too close to the castle itself.

The soldiers have perhaps recently returned from duty in India, where they helped to put down the Mutiny. During the campaign the regiment lost some 256 men of all ranks, but returned home the ' Saviours of India'.
