Captain Lord Kirkwall, 71st Regiment, in the Crimea
Add to album

Photograph of Captain George William Hamilton, Viscount Kirkwall. Photograph taken by Roger Fenton in 1855 and published by J. Agnew and Sons (Manchester) and others, 1 January 1856.

He is dressed as a mounted officer of the 71st Highlanders, in leather-reinforced trews of Mackenzie tartan, shell jacket, forage cap and with a light cavalry pattern sword - a style better suited to horseback than the basket-hilted broadsword.

Lord Kirkwall joined the 71st as a Captain from the 92nd Regiment in 1853 and went to the Crimea in 1855. He was accompanied by his pet dog, which can be seen in the foreground. He transferred to the Scots Fusilier Guards in 1856 and retired in 1857.
