Engraving of Alexander Leslie (c. 1582 - 1661), General of the Scottish Army, 1642.

Leslie began his military career in the United provinces before moving to Sweden where he served in the Swedish army for 30 years, rising to the rank of Field Marshal. In 1638, he took command of the Scottish Army of the Covenant during the Bishops' Wars.
