Photograph of 2nd Lieutenant Egerton before joining the 72nd Regiment of Foot at Kabul, 1879.

Granville George Algernon Egerton entered the army at the age of 20. Initially he served with the 72nd Regiment of Foot and joined the famous march from Kabul to Kandahar where the British defeated the Afghan army under the command of Ayub Khan in 1880.
