He is shown wearing the bandsman's distinctive white doublet with shoulder 'wings' and armed with the brass basket-hilted sword, unique at this time to bandsmen of Highland regiments.

Photographs from Queen Victoria's photograph album 'Crimean Heroes' were to provide inspiration for both French and British military painters for the rest of the century.
