Engraving of General Sir David Baird, Bart, G.C.B., K.C
Add to album

Baird had a long and impressive career, as the hero of the capture of Seringapatam, 1799, and later in the Peninsular War. His uniform in this portrait is that of a general officer after 1811, and he is wearing the Army Gold medal for Corunna.

It was at the Battle of Corunna in 1809 that he lost his arm after a charge of grapeshot hit him just below the shoulder. The primitive medicine of the day left no option but to remove the arm by dislocating it from the socket.

The engraving was made by E. Finden after a painting by Sir Henry Raeburn, and published by Richard Bentley, London, 1832.
