Carbon photograph of drummers of the 78th Regiment of Foot, 1860

78th Regiment of Foot - Carbon photograph of the Bass Drummer and a Drummer in Drill Order, 1860. Leopard skins have been worn by bass drummers since the 18th century, as part of the fashion for oriental musical accessories.

When the Indian Mutiny broke out in 1857, the 78th was nearly at the end of a tour of foreign service in India, so it was one of the first regiments to return home at the end of the campaign.

The year after this photograph was taken, a monument was erected on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle to the memory of the 256 men from all ranks who had fallen during the Indian Mutiny. This toll included the lives of six drummers.
