Fossil fish discovered by Hugh Miller

This fossil fish, or Coccosteus, was found by Hugh Miller in the Middle Old Red Sandstone of Cromarty in Ross-shire. His religious beliefs influenced his approach to geology.

Old Red Sandstone, a typical rock formation found around Cromarty, is rich in fossilised fish.

Hugh Miller, 1802-1856, is remembered for making geology more understandable and popular during the 1840s and 1850s. He discovered fossil fish in the rocks at Cromarty and wrote popular books about the wonders of geology.
