Medal given to Dr John Rae

This is the Founder's Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society of London. It was given to the explorer Dr John Rae on 26 May, 1852.

This gold medal has the words "DOCTOR JOHN RAE, MAY XXIV, MDCCCLII" inscribed on the band around the edge.

Dr. John Rae, 1813-1893, was involved in the search for Sir John Franklin's missing Arctic exploration team. Rae found the evidence of their unhappy fate during the fourth Arctic expedition of 1853-4.
