Tartan cloth

This is a selection of tartan cloth ready for the kilt-making industry.

There are several thousands of tartans in existence today. This selection includes: Caledonia, Gordon, Young, Hamilton Ancient, and Campbell of Argyll.

The naming of tartans began in the second half of the 18th century when the weavers Wilson of Bannockburn started to name their patterns after towns and districts. Early in the 19th century the use of family names for tartans began to predominate. The practice of designing new patterns continued during the 19th and early 20th centuries and today a new tartan is designed almost daily. The commercial promotion of tartan by manufacturers and the fashion industry has meant a huge increase in demand.
