Umbrella stand
Add to album

This umbrella stand, dating from around 1890, was made at Peter Gardner's pottery in Dunmore in Falkirk district.

The stand is decorated in chinoiserie design, a style of decorative art based on imitations of Chinese motifs. The large flower at the bottom of the stand is a sunflower, a popular aesthetic symbol which appealed to the artistic market.

Wares made by Peter Gardner's pottery, Dunmore were retailed in the best shops in London as well as in Scottish stores such as the Royal Emporium in Edinburgh's Castle Street. Their distinctive designs were very popular.
