Major-General Roger Aytoun, who was six feet four, is shown with the Duc d'Angouleme, who was five feet four. In the background is the 1st Regiment of Edinburgh Volunteers, whose uniform was blue with red facings.

The Duke was the eldest son of King Charles X of France. He lived at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh for some years after the French Revolution.

John Kay was born near Edinburgh in 1742. A keen artist from childhood, he was a barber until 1785 when he became a full-time engraver and painter of miniatures. His portraits of Edinburgh characters are vivid and unmistakable.
