Add to album

This is the obverse of a Scottish Military & Naval Academy silver medal for military exercises. The medal was presented in 1826 to Simon Fraser, later Major General Fraser.

The engraved obverse depicts a cadet of the Academy receiving a laurel, with the Nelson Monument on Calton Hill, Arthur's Seat and Edinburgh Castle in the background. The inscription 'Palmam Qui Meruit Fecit' means 'Let He Who Merits it bear the Palm'.

The Scottish Military & Naval Academy in Edinburgh operated from 1825 until 1869. It provided specialised private education for young men who wished to become officers in the Royal Navy, the army, or the East India Company's services.
