Miniature portrait, of Lieutenant Landers, Breadalbane Fencibles

This miniature portrait is of Lieutenant Landers of the Breadalbane Fencibles, a special home defence regiment set up as a result of the government's refusal to create a Scottish militia.

Breadalbane Fencibles - Miniature of Lieutenant Landers

In 1794, harsh discipline provoked a serious mutiny in this regiment, one of many which undermined the reliability of Highland fencible regiments. A Scottish nationwide militia force was eventually created by the government in 1797.
