Plate

This maiolica plate was made at Urbino in Italy, probably at the Guido Durantino Workshop, between 1538 and 1560.

The plate has, painted in polychrome, a depiction of The Death of Saul and Jonathan announced to David. In the centre, the Amalekite kneels holding Saul's bracelet and crown in front of David and his attendants. David rends his clothes. To the right, in the distance, is Saul's death on Mount Giboa. The underside is inscribed 'Davidi mors saulis & Jonathe nunciatur-'.

The illustration, together with the inscription on the underside, was copied directly from the illustrated Bible 'Historiarum veterie Instrumenti icones ad aiuum expressae' of 1538.
