Drum, of South FenciblesThis drum was used by the South Fencibles, a regiment raised by the Duke of Buccleuch in 1778. The drum would have provided accompaniment to a military band and would have been supplied at the expense of the regiment's Colonel. South Fencible Regiment - Regimental drum, 1778 - 1783 The South Fencibles regiment was disbanded in 1783 after having spent its entire service in Scotland. Despite the prominent use of the thistle, a national symbol of Scotland, many saw these regiments as an extension of the influence of a small group of leading aristocratic and political figures.
