Add to albumThis lantern was carried by Lady Grizel Baillie on her nightly visits to her Covenanter father, Sir Patrick Hume, during his concealment in the vault beneath Polwarth Church in Edinburgh in 1684.
The three-cornered lantern has a wooden frame and base, a small handle and clasp made of ivory, and leather hinges. A tin candleholder is nailed to the centre of the base.
As a Covenanter, Patrick Hume (1641-1724) was outlawed and later escaped to Holland. He returned with William of Orange in 1688 and participated in the 'Glorious Revolution'. In 1696 he was made Lord Chancellor of Scotland.
