Model, of SS DiscoveryThis wooden model represents 'SS Discovery', an auxiliary barque used by Captain Robert Falcon Scott in his explorations of the Antarctic in 1901-4. A barque was a three to five-masted vessel, square-rigged on all except the aftermast, which was fore-and-aft rigged. The model is built to a scale of 1:480. Discovery was specially built for the expedition by the Dundee Shipbuilding Company. Her hull was built of thick wooden planks and frames to withstand the rigours of Antarctic exploration. The British Antarctic Expedition was organised by a joint committee of the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society. It explored the Ross Sea and travelled further south then ever before.
