Miniature painting showing Hindu god ShivaThis miniature painting depicts one of the favourite scenes of Hindu beliefs - the moving of the god Shiva, his consort Parvati and their sons from one camp to another in the Himalayas. It was painted around 1830, and may be in Mandi Kagra style. The painting shows Shiva extending his hand to help Parvati, who carries their son Kartikeya. The monkey-god Hanuman carries their baggage, while in the background their son the elephant god Ganesha and Parvati's peacock ride Shiva's bull, Nandi. Representations of scenes from Hindu belief have traditionally been a part of most people's lives, from carvings and paintings in temples and palaces, to small images kept at home. This painting was probably made for a well-to-do person. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
