Candleholder
Add to album

This iron candleholder is from the old City Weigh-house in Edinburgh. It dates from the late 17th or early 18th century.

The pillar candleholder has a shallow drip pan around the top of the pillar and mouldings around the middle. The lower half of the stem has a slit opening, and inside is an iron rod which slides up and down by means of a flat circular handle.

Used for the weighing of a wide range of merchandise, the City Weigh-house was at the head of the West Bow and the Lawnmarket at the top of the High Street. It was cleared away in 1822, as part of the preparations for the visit of George IV.
