This church sand glass is from Bathgate Church in West Lothian. The wrought iron stand is from St. Cuthbert's Church in Edinburgh and dates from the late 17th century.

The preaching of God's word was central to Presbyterian worship. During the course of a Sunday the minister might preach three separate sermons, at great length and without notes, timing himself with an hour glass.
