Model, of fishing boat

This wooden model represents a Faroe Islands fishing boat from 1858. It is built to a scale of 1:12.

This eight-man fishing boat shows many characteristics of the Viking longboat. The double-ended form gave good buoyancy in heavy seas and was commonly known as a 'whaler'. The sail was known as a lugsail.

The Faroe Islands lie 320 kilometres to the north-west of Shetland and the local fishermen used this type of boat to catch grindhval and bottle-nosed whales. The whale meat would have been cut into steaks for eating and the blubber was used for oil.
