Grave-slabThis small medieval grave-slab, probably for a child, was formerly in the chapel at Aldbar Castle in Angus. It dates from the 13th century. The slab is engraved with the Calvary Cross and a knight's sword. The sword is a sign of rank and also represents the soldiers of Christ. In medieval times, only the privileged and powerful were buried inside a church. Others were normally buried in a church graveyard, unless they were suicides or excommunicated from the Church.
