Bread-crock

This glazed earthenware bread-crock with cover was possibly made at Belfield's Pottery at Prestonpans in East Lothian. It dates from the second half of the 19th century.

The bread-crock is decorated with splashed brown and green glaze. The longer sides of the crock are relief moulded with vases containing fruit.

Belfield's Pottery was established by Charles Belfield in the mid-1830s. By the mid-19th century the pottery was employing between 20 and 40 people. The business remained a family concern and continued until the mid-20th century. Belfield's is best known for high quality earthenware, particularly its Rockingham teapots and coffee pots, maiolica ware and everyday kitchen ware.
